Bryce Homes Kenya Update |
|||||
When I first joined Bryce Homes Program in Kenya, I was told it started way back in 2011. The original intention then was to transform lives of a few families. Surprisingly, it fast transitioned into a life impacting outreach program as Lighthouse Trails Readers partnered with UTT to support it unwaveringly. This led to radical numerical increase in the number of children and widows being reached with the support. As at present, rural communities in Kenya have been greatly impacted. Widows have had their houses alongside pit latrines built, water collection and purification system installed and regular monthly support given. Other benefits included solar lights for households which are not connected to the costly electricity. Children in these households (mostly orphans) as well as their widowed mothers have greatly experienced holistic growth. Every month, as it has been a routine, we visit these households and more often have fellowship with them. During such visits, they share testimonies which mostly compare and contrast their present with the life before Bryce Homes Program.
One striking feature in testimonies given by these widows revolves around abject poverty coupled with dangers of HIV/AIDS. In communities where majority lived without the knowledge of the saving gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, negative culture characterized by tribal traditions of wife inheritance led to the spread of the disease like bushfire. Many children became orphans (total or partial) while their widowed mothers became helpless to fend for their daily bread. As expressed in their testimonies, some of these widows even thought of taking away their lives. Such testimonies still sadden us as we always try to encourage them not to focus on the painful past experiences.
Mary is one of the widows we visited this month and had an opportunity to share her testimony as she reflected on how she became part of this life transforming Program over a year ago. When her husband died, she was left with four children and without any source of income. Life worries made her visit a church in their neighborhood but because of the burden, the resident pastor at the church referred her to Bryce Homes Board in Kenya since he (the said pastor) had heard of good deeds by Bryce Homes Program. Since there are always many cases of those who want to be part of Bryce Homes Program, we were not quick to include her into the program but arranged for a visit to her house. On arrival, we were touched to see the sorry state of her life in a small mud shack house. Coincidentally, it had rained overnight so she was taking her bedding out to dry in the sun. They were dilapidated dirty bedding with awful smell. We immediately arranged for some detergent and allowed her do the washing. We did not proceed with the interview since it was obvious we had already got the answer to the questions we were going to ask. We therefore unconditionally included her in the Program and that is how she became part of Bryce Homes Kenya. So early this month, she shared with us the impact that these support have had in her life. Looking at her face alone makes the story short. She has really improved in health and her children are now very happy. It is also good news to learn that she received salvation and identified a Church where she attends for spiritual nourishment.
This is Widow Mary2. She was included into the Program a year ago and was assigned BH #63. Already the testimony we receive from her is so encouraging and we thank God for transforming her life for the better.
It is so encouraging to always hear about the efforts UTT and Lighthouse Trails readers make to support this life impacting Program. We pray that God may continue to bless every last one of you in undertaking this unique outreach ministry. This motivates us to remain faithful stewards as we ensure the donations directly impact the lives of the needy in our communities.
