Bryce Homes Kenya Update |
|||||
September support came early for the Kenya-based Bryce Homes. This was a blessing at the hour of need. At a time when the Kenyan National Media have been reporting that over 2.6 million people are acutely affected by famine and seeking the international communities to intervene, the Bryce Homes Program has been a great blessing helping to provide for our needs. While we promised information about the children under this program in this September report, we ask the readers’ pardon to allow us to focus on emerging issues. As the Lord made resources available in good time for the month of September, the Board in Kenya took on the responsibility to reach out to the children of God immediately. Lukio who is the secretary in the Bryce Homes Kenya Board conducted a surprise visit to the Bryce Homes in two regions and the news that he brought back was concerning. The ravaging drought has caused famine and a few who own some livestock fear they may succumb to drought due to lack of pasture.
. This boy in the above photo was an onlooker at one of the Bryce Homes. He too was lucky to take some greens home. The background depicts the effect of the drought in the land. As the majority of the Bryce Homes are located in a semi-arid area designated as a hardship region, the ongoing drought has left them in a difficult state since all vegetation is totally withered. The land which at times in the past looked green is now brown. Vegetables which are the major component of the Kenyan diet have vanished and if located at markets are too expensive to purchase because of the drought. This is why Pastor Achilla decided to purchase two sacks of Kale as a surprise extra gift when we took the September monthly food support. The outcome of this gift was very much appreciated and attracted neighbors who wanted to have a few leaves too. Therefore, we take this opportunity to ask for your prayers that God may bring rain to make food available, especially vegetables and cereals.
Regarding children, we are quite encouraged. Through the monthly support available from the Bryce Homes program their lives have been sustained. This program supports 33 homes with an average of four children under their care. This translates to over one hundred children. We are glad God has sustained these children throughout the August holiday when schools were closed. Though school fees have been a great challenge to most of these children in high school, we thank God for those continuing with their education. It is such a good thing to see such a large number of children brought up in a Christian environment as a result of this program.
This report would be incomplete if we did not mention the Small Business Opportunity this program has made possible for some of the young widows here. The recent case is Phoebe (BH #26). We had time to interview her and ask about the progress of her SBO. The findings were encouraging. Phoebe now retails fish made possible by a donation given for her starting capital. The Board humbly presents the need to dig wells for some of these Bryce Homes in the dry areas as a prayer item. This will enable them to fetch water and irrigate their kitchen gardens in order to grow vegetables for their consumption.
