SCIENCE
FINDS GOD |
||||||||||
The front cover of a Newsweek magazine has a headline that reads: “Science Finds God.” For years science has been instrumental in explaining away the need for the supernatural. Now some scientists are saying that the “new science” explains who God is. Is there a reason why this is happening? According
to the leading paragraph, author Sharon Begley
claims there is a new trend underway. She states:
“The achievements of modern science seem to
contradict religion and undermine faith. But for a
growing number of scientists, the same discoveries
offer support for spirituality and hints of the very
nature of God.”[1]
So what is happening? For years scientists
have been championing the idea there is no need to
rely upon the supernatural to explain the natural.
Why all of a sudden do we hear so much about science
and religion joining hands? Is this a sign that
people are turning to the God of the Bible? Or is
the God that so many scientists are beginning to
find the God
of the Bible?
For example consider the remarks of Arthur
Peacocke, a biochemist who became a priest in the
Church of England in 1971. As one of the scientists
who has now “found God,” Newsweek claims
Peacocke has no quarrel with evolution. In fact to
the contrary, he finds in evolution “signs of
God’s nature.”
Peacocke infers from evolution, that God has
chosen to limit his omnipotence and omniscience. He
believes that the appearance of chance mutations and
the Darwinian laws of nature act to bring about the
diversity of life on Earth.[2] Another
promoter of the idea that God and evolution are
compatible is John Haught, founder of the Georgetown
University Center for the Study of Science and
religion. He believes that the evolutionary process
suggests that God has a divine humility – a God
who acts selflessly for the good of creation. He
says the fact that God used evolution to create is a
“humble retreat on God’s part – much as a
parent lets a child be and become without
interference – so does God let creation make
itself.”[3] Now,
are you beginning to see why a secular magazine like
Newsweek would publish an article in support
of the idea that God can be found through science
– when the science they are talking about is the
philosophy of evolution. Anyone,
who accepts the view that God directed the process
of evolution, to create, does not understand what
the Bible states about creation. The God of the
Bible did not allow some haphazard process involving
the survival of the fittest to bring about all
living things. The science that permits the idea that God and evolution are compatible promotes a view that is based upon an eastern worldview. You can expect that it will become increasingly more popular in the future. Stay with what the Bible teaches rather than what men are saying. That way you will always be right. |
