During the dark ages people believed non-life could become life spontaneously. They foolishly believed that garbage turned into maggots, flies and rats. Of course this was proven false when Francesco Redi performed his famous experiment. He covered over some garbage with a very fine gauged screen, separating the flies and rats from the garbage. Redi’s simple experiment proved life could not arise from non-life, spontaneously.
Later in history, Darwin and other evolutionary biologists revised Redi’s law by stating life originated spontaneously in the distant past. These scientists believed billions of years ago, in some unknown place, in some unknown way, non-living molecules assembled by chance to form the first cell. Of course this has never been duplicated in the lab. It is important to note that in spite of the lack of documentation, scientists who believe in evolution still have the faith to believe it happened.
In April of 2004 an interesting article appeared in the Orange County register. When I read the headline, I couldn’t believe my eyes - “Scientists nearly ready to create artificial life.” [1]
