God's Word For Today |

Matthew 16:15-18 "He said to them, but who do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered and said, you are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus answered and said to him, Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it."
This is the important question that Jesus asked His disciples that forms the foundation of Christianity and the church of Jesus Christ. The foundation of the church is the corner stone, Jesus Christ and His plan of salvation. It is on this very fact alone. Without this understanding of who Jesus is and what He said, no one can be called a Christian. Unfortunately, there are many who believe they are Christians who substitute this basic understanding of Christianity with their own dogmas and traditions. They believe that Peter, a man, was the rock that Jesus was referring.
Application: Have you thought about this important question and come up with an answer to what Jesus asked? Is Jesus your personal corner stone when it comes to the foundation of the church or do you have some other idea. Some believe that Jesus was telling Peter that he was the foundational stone for the church of Jesus Christ. If this is true, then the church is in great difficulty as later in this context of scripture Jesus referred to Peter as “Satan” and said to get behind Him. Surely, Peter, a mere man, is not the foundation of the Christian church based on what the Bible teaches.
