God's Word For Today |

1 Timothy 6:10-12 "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses."
Note that Paul warns Timothy about one of major traps that has destroyed the faith of many who once followed Jesus. It is not money itself that is evil, but it is the love of money. When money or possessions become the most important thing in our lives, God is set aside and money or possessions become God instead. Paul then lists the attributes of righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience and gentleness that believers should be seeking. In this way we can be soldiers for Christ and fight the good fight and be a good witness to those around us.
Application: Satan knows how to sidetrack believers by getting them to focus on the accumulation of material possessions rather than living and testifying of the life that goes along with being a child of God. There is nothing wrong with having wealth. However, it would be better to be poor and walk with God than to be rich and walk away from God. All of us need to examine our lives. What is most important? - what we own or what we have given away, whether it be money or our time?
