Revelation 2:4-5 "Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place--unless you repent."
This portion of scripture taken from Revelation chapter two includes the words spoken by Jesus Christ to the church at Ephesus. If you read this in context you will see that the members being addressed in this church were zealous in their ability to detect false teachers and heretical doctrines. Although they were commended for contending for the faith they were also reprimanded for the way they were contending. Jesus told them that they needed to repent from this attitude that they had towards these deceived Christians or they would lose their testimony and witness.
Application: The Bible demands that we do contend for the faith. The problem is that when we contend for the faith it is easy to become contentious. When we are contentious then it is not possible to reach out to those who are deceived by false teachers and false doctrines. Being an apologist for biblical truth is not an easy task. When someone attempts to warn those in error with the truth of the Word, the message is most often ignored or rejected. The person who is contending must understand they are in the midst of a spiritual battle. It is important to understand the reason Christians end up being deceived is because Satan is the one who is inspiring them to get off track. It is always important to contend for the faith in love. It is a fact that a Christian can be so right that they are wrong.
