God's Word For Today |

1 Samuel 12:19-22 "And all the people said to Samuel, Pray for your servants to the LORD your God, that we may not die; for we have added to all our sins the evil of asking a king for ourselves. Then Samuel said to the people, Do not fear. You have done all this wickedness; yet do not turn aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart. And do not turn aside; for then you would go after empty things which cannot profit or deliver, for they are nothing. For the LORD will not forsake His people, for His great name's sake, because it has pleased the LORD to make you His people."
It was never intended that the Jewish people choose a king over themselves as their leader. They were to follow the LORD and the LORD alone. Because sheep look to shepherds, and humans are compared to sheep, it is human nature to follow men and not God. Samuel makes it clear to the Israelites there would be consequences for their disobedience yet God would not abandon nor forsake them.
Application: While this portion of scripture is directed to the Children of Israel there is a direct application for Christians as well. Substituting humans as leaders that take the place of Jesus Christ as the Good Shepherd will lead to confusion and error. The Bible makes it clear this is one of Satan’s clever plans to introduce doctrines of demons, especially in the Last Days before Jesus returns. Always look to Jesus Christ and His Word if you want to remain on target. Otherwise, there is a strong possibility of being led astray by the whiles of the devil.
