May 4 - China military build-up seems U.S.-focused: Mullen
Article: Wars and Rumors of Wars
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -
China's build-up of
sea and air military power
funded by a strong economy appears aimed
at the United States,
the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of
Staff said on Monday.
Admiral Michael Mullen said China had the
right to meet its security
needs, but the
build-up would require the
United States to work with its Pacific
allies to respond to
increasing Chinese military
capabilities.
"They
are developing capabilities that are very
maritime focused, maritime
and air focused, and in many ways,
very much focused on
us,"
he told a conference of the Navy League, a
nonprofit seamen's
support group, in Washington. "They
seem very
focused on the United States Navy and our
bases that are in that
part of the world."
But he said the build-up
propelled by fast economic growth
required the United States and
allies or partners like South Korea,
Japan, Australia and New
Zealand to work
together to "figure out a way
to work with (China)" to avoid
miscalculations.
Mullen's comments followed
remarks by President Barack Obama's top
adviser on Asia on Friday
calling for
high-level talks with the Chinese
military to reduce mistrust.
A brief naval clash in
March in waters near China underscored
that "the
absence of a sound relationship between
our two militaries is a part
of that strategic mistrust,"
said Jeffrey Bader, senior
director for Asian affairs at the National
Security Council.

May 28 - Christian group claims progress on a common Easter
Article: Ecumenical Movement - Protestants Uniting With Roman Catholics
GENEVA (AP) - Christianity's
largest ecumenical movement expressed hope
Thursday
that churches were
moving closer to a common
Easter for the world's Christians, despite
a historical debate
nearly as old as the
religion.
Catholic and Protestant congregations will
celebrate their belief in
Jesus' resurrection on the same day as
Orthodox churches in 2010 and
2011 because of a coincidence in
the Julian and Gregorian
calendars. The common holiday has happened
three times this decade.
But the World Council of Churches says
consensus is emerging that these should
not just be occasional
occurrences.
At a recent meeting in
Lviv, Ukraine, theologians representing
nearly the breadth of
Christianity agreed
in principle on a strategy
for all the faithful to continue observing
their feast together.
"It's not a problem of principle, of
dogma or of doctrine,"
said Juan Michel, spokesman for the
council, whose 350 Protestant,
Orthodox and other churches represent more
than 560 million
Christians. It
cooperates with the Roman
Catholic Church, which is not a
member.
"It's more of a pastoral
issue for some churches," said
Michel. "There are concerns how the
faithful will feel if there is a change in
the traditional way of
calculating the date."

May 30 - Obama promises Arabs Jerusalem will be theirs
Article: Israel And The Last Days
President Obama and his
administration told Palestinian Authority
President Mahmoud Abbas during
a meeting last week the U.S. foresees the creation
of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as
its capital, according
to a top PA official speaking to WND. "The
American administration was very friendly
to the position of the PA,"
said Nimer Hamad, Abbas' senior
political adviser.
"Abu Mazen (Abbas) heard from
Obama and his administration in a very
categorical way that
a Palestinian state
with Jerusalem as its capital
is in the American national and security
interest," Hamad said.
Another PA official, speaking
on condition of anonymity, told WND today
that
Obama informed Abbas he would not let Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
"get in the way" of normalizing
U.S. relations with the Arab and greater
Muslim world. "We were told
from this new
administration they will not allow a
Netanyahu government to hurt their
efforts of rehabilitating U.S. relations
with the Arab and Islamic
world, which is a high priority of
Obama," the official said,
speaking during a visit to Cairo.
Also last week, a top
Palestinian Authority official claimed in a
WND interview that
the Obama
administration told the PA that
Jerusalem will never be united under
Israeli sovereignty. "Americans
said an open Jerusalem - yes. But a united
Jerusalem under Israeli
sovereignty - no," Hatem Abdel
Khader, the PA's minister for
Jerusalem affairs, said in comments to both
WND and Israel's Ynetnews
website.
"(The Obama administration)
has made clear that Jerusalem must be
accessible to everyone - but not united
under Israel's rule,"
Khader said.
