August 5 - Hezbollah Stockpiles 40,000 Rockets Capable of Hitting Israel
Article: Israel And The Last Days
Three years after Israel
fought a bloody war in Lebanon against
Hezbollah, there are
growing fears that
hostilities could erupt again this
time with the militant group better armed
than ever. According to
Israeli, United Nations and Hezbollah
officials, the Shia Muslim militia
is today stronger than
it was in 2006 when it took on
the might of the Israeli army in a war that
cost the lives of 1,191 Lebanese
and 43 Israeli civilians.
Hezbollah
has stockpiled up to
40,000 rockets and is training
its forces to use ground-to-ground missiles
capable of hitting Tel Aviv and
anti-aircraft missiles that could challenge
Israel's dominance of the skies
over Lebanon.
Brigadier-General Alon
Friedman, the deputy head of Israel's
Northern Command, told The Times from
his headquarters overlooking the
Israeli-Lebanese border that
the current stability was "in
danger." He added that the peace,
which
has reigned over the rolling Biblical
landscape for the past three years,
could "explode at any
minute."
His concerns were partly due
to threats from Hezbollah's leadership. Last
month, Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah,
Hezbollah's leader, warned that if the southern
suburbs of Beirut were bombed as they were
in the last war, he would strike
back against Tel Aviv, Israel's largest
city.
"We
have changed the equation that had existed
previously," he said. "Now
the southern suburbs versus Tel Aviv, and
not Beirut versus Tel Aviv."

August 2 - Thousands quarantined as pneumonic plague hits China
Article: Signs Of The Last Times
A 32-year-old herdsman
died in Ziketan, a Tibetan area of Qinghai
province, according to the
province's health authority. It did not
specify when he died. The other
11 victims are relatives of the deceased
and are in stable condition in
hospital, a statement said.
The other 10,000
inhabitants of Ziketan, which covers an
area of over 1,000 sq miles on
the Tibetan plateau, have been quarantined. A team
of medical experts have been dispatched to
monitor the disease.
Pneumonic plague
is spread through the air and can be passed
from person to person
through coughing,
according to the World Health
Organisation (WHO). It is triggered by
the same bacteria as bubonic plague, which
killed an estimated 25
million people in Europe during the Middle
Ages.
Bubonic plague can
now be treated with antibiotics,
but
pneumonic plague remains highly lethal and
infectious. The WHO said
humans can die within 24 hours of
infection.
The Chinese health
ministry announced last September that a
married couple in western Tibet
had died from pneumonic plague.

August 1 - Many Americans don't believe in hell, but what about pastors?
Article: Misc.
Just when it seemed to
have cooled off, the topic of hell is back
on the front burner - at
least for pastors learning to preach about
a topic
most Americans would rather not talk about.
Only 59% of
Americans believe in hell,
compared with 74% who believe in
heaven, according to the recent
surveys from the Pew Forum on
Religion and Public Life.
"I
think it's such a difficult and important
biblical topic," said Kurt Selles,
director of the Global Center at Samford
University's Beeson Divinity
School. "There's
a big change that's taken place as
far as evangelicals not wanting to be as
exclusive."
At
the recent annual Beeson Pastors School,
Selles led two workshops to discuss
"Whatever happened to hell?" He
asked how many of the pastors had ever
preached a sermon on hell. Nobody had, he
said.
"It's
out of fear we'll not appear relevant,"
he said.
"It's pressure
from the culture to not speak anything
negative. I think we've begun to deny hell.
There's an assumption that
everybody's going to make it to heaven
somehow."
Pope
John Paul II stirred up a debate in 1999 by
describing
hell as "the state of those who freely
and definitely separate themselves
from God, the source of all life and
joy." Although the pope was
reflecting official Roman Catholic teaching,
some U.S. evangelicals
expressed misgivings about the implication
that hell is an abstract separation from God
rather than a literal lake of
fire as described in the Book of
Revelation.
The
pope's comments on hell stirred up the
ancient debate about
whether hell is a real
place of burning fire or a
state of mind reflecting a dark, cold
emptiness and distance from
God.
Either
way, Selles said,
pretending
that hell doesn't exist, or trying to preach
around it, short-circuits the
Bible."This is a doctrine, a teaching,
that's being neglected in churches,"
Selles said. "It needs to be preached.
It's part of the
Gospel."

August 3 - Christians, Muslims forging new bonds in Southland
Artilce: Ecumenical Movement - Christianity Uniting With Other Religions
Nonetheless, Southern
California's Christians
and Jews have spoken out in
defense of Muslims on local issues, such as
building a new mosque.
Religious leaders have also joined a national
campaign taking the U.S.
government to task for what the leaders call
state-sponsored torture.
Catholics and Muslims
have discussed immigration and the
Koran's reverence for Jesus and Mary.
Muslims have joined other faiths in
programs that serve the poor, the hungry and
battered women. Jewish
organizations have helped fund education
programs in Catholic schools. Religious
leaders of all stripes meet together
regularly.
A new effort
is unfolding among Christians and
Muslims to build additional bridges at a time
when President Obama has made
reaching out to the Islamic world a national
priority.
"So long as our
relationship is defined by our
differences, we will empower those who sow
hatred rather than peace, those who
promote conflict rather than the cooperation
that can help all of our people
achieve justice and prosperity,"
Obama said in a major speech in Cairo in
June. "And this
cycle of suspicion and discord must
end."
Southern California religious leaders said
they viewed the
president's speech as an affirmation of their
work. The next step will
unfold in the months ahead when local churches and mosques
will be asked to work together in a new
educational program called Standing
Together.
A keystone of the new interfaith
program is its
emphasis on not seeking
converts, a question that
came up
several times during a talk Guibord gave in
Westwood on Saturday before 35
people of various faiths. "This is not an opportunity for
proselytizing," she assured the
group.
She recounted the Biblical story of the
patriarch Abraham, who kept all four
sides of his tent open in the desert so that
he could see travelers approaching
from any direction. He would offer them
hospitality, food and shelter.
"I like to think
of the work . . . as Abraham's tent where
we keep all four sides open,"
Guibord said.

August 4 - Miraculous image experts to speak at Congress on Our Lady of Guadalupe
Article: Signs And Wonders
The Knights of
Columbus is preparing to host a
Congress on Our Lady of Guadalupe which not
only will
feature top experts on the miraculous image,
but will also focus on
its spiritual meaning for the world
today.
In 1531, Our
Lady of Guadalupe appeared to
Saint Juan Diego, a poor Indian from
Tepeyac, a hill northwest of Mexico
City. She
identified herself as the Mother of the
True God and left an image of herself
imprinted miraculously on his tilma, a
poor quality cactus-cloth. Although
the tilma should have deteriorated
within 20 years, it still shows no sign of
decay over 470 years later.
Featured
lecturers will include Dr. José Aste
Tonsmann from Peru, who is known for doing extensive
research on the reflections visible in the
image's eyes. Also
speaking will be Rev. Msgr. Eduardo Chávez,
who oversaw the cause for
canonization of St. Juan Diego and Carl
Anderson, Supreme Knight of the
Knights of Columbus.
In addition
to addressing the scientific
aspects of the image,
the congress will also discuss
the spiritual meaning of Our Lady of
Guadalupe's message of love and
compassion and its relevance
today.
"The centrality of Our
Lady of Guadalupe to the Americas as 'the
Christian Hemisphere' is clearly
evident throughout North and South America,"
said Supreme Knight Carl
Anderson in a press release. "Her message
is one that has as much importance and
meaning today as it did nearly 500
years ago.".

August 6 - Let us build together peace and reconciliation in Sri Lanka, says new Archbishop Ranjit
Article: Ecumenical Movement - Other Religions Uniting With Roman Catholics
During the ceremony of
installation as 9th archbishop of the
diocese of Colombo, Mgr Malcom Ranjit
urged
Catholics, Buddhists,
Hindus,
political leaders and ordinary people to
remain united to build together
"true peace and reconciliation in the
country".
The solemn ceremony,
which took place yesterday, saw the presence
of thousands of faithful,
representatives of the diocese's various
parishes as
well as members of other Christian Churches,
and Hindu and Buddhist
communities. The country's bishops
and Apostolic Nuncio Joseph
Spiteri were also present. The ceremonial
Mass was held in Sinhalese, Tamil
and English.
He also explained that
the Church
wants to work with the
president, with political and religious
leaders as well as all citizens to
build a just, free and democratic society
where differences in religion,
race or language do not become a cause of
division but rather one of
unity.
A
number of Buddhist monks came to the
ceremony even though it fell on a day
that is important to the Buddhist
religion, namely the day of Poya,
the full moon.
Speaking to them Mgr
Ranjit said: "I want
to express my total solidarity
with the members of the Maha Sangha
(Buddhist monks). As the majority
religious groups they want to work for true
peace and reconciliation in the
nation."

August 5 - Congressman wants government GPS in cars
Article: One World Government
An Oregon congressman says
he wants to test
having a government GPS unit in every
car so a tax could be imposed on the miles
driven.
"Oregon has successfully
tested a Vehicle Miles Traveled fee, and it is time to
expand and test the VMT program across the
country," he said in a
statement on his website. "A VMT system
can better
assess fees based on use of our roads and
bridges, as well as during times
of peak congestion, than a fee based on fuel
consumption.
"It is time to
get creative and find smart ways to
rebuild and renew America's deteriorating
infrastructure," he said.
His plan calls for the Department of the
Treasury to study the plan with
projects in every state.
Blumenauer said the
Oregon test "charged drivers for the
number of miles
they traveled rather the fuel they consumed.
The test was convenient for
drivers, protected personal privacy, and
proved to be easily administrable."
In a
WND column,
however, Henry Lamb raised several concerns
unaddressed by the congressman.
For example, what other
applications would
there be for a GPS unit attached to each car
in the nation?
What about
"shutting down the vehicle when its
allotted emissions cap had been
reached."
"Every American ought to
be outraged that such a system is even
contemplated," he continued.
"This system is the tool
that makes slaves of every person who
depends upon a vehicle. Every person should
consider just how his life would
be changed if he were required to get
approval from the federal government
to start his car."
Lamb said shutting down a
vehicle would be among the less intrusive
possibilities.
"The proposed GPS
road tax system could easily be
programmed to listen to and record
conversations inside any vehicle. It
could stop a vehicle, lock the occupants
inside and notify the 'jack boots'
that the occupants were en route to a tea
party," Lamb
wrote. "We would hope that the federal
government would never sink to the
level of paranoia that gripped Nazi Germany.
But then, we also hoped that
the federal government would never sink to
the level of labeling legal,
peaceful assemblies, such as the recent tea
parties, as gatherings of
potential terrorists."

August 3 - Brave New World - UK Government To Install Surveillance Cameras In Private Homes
Article: One World Government
The UK government is about
to spend $700 million dollars installing surveillance
cameras inside the private homes of citizens
to ensure that children go to
bed on time, attend school and eat proper
meals.
No you
aren't reading a passage from George
Orwell's 1984 or Aldous
Huxley's Brave New World, this is
Britain in 2009, a country which
already has more
surveillance cameras watching its
population than the whole of Europe put
together.
Now the
government is embarking on a scheme called
"Family
Intervention Projects" which will literally
create a nanny state on
steroids, with social services goons and
private security guards given the
authority to make regular "home checks" to
ensure parents are raising their
children correctly.
Telescreens
will also be installed so government spies
can keep an eye on whether
parents are mistreating kids and whether the
kids are fulfilling their
obligations under a pre-signed
contract.
Another key
aspect of the program will see parents
deemed "responsible" by the
government handed the
power to denounce and report bad
parents who allow their children to engage
in bad behavior. Such families
will then be targeted for
"interventions".
Both parents
and children will also
be forced to sign a "behavior
contract" with the government known as Home
School Agreements before the
start of every year, in which the state will
dictate obligations that it
expects to be met.
