This year will
go down on record, as seeing the most volcanic
eruptions recorded in modern history. The previous number was set in 2010, at 82
volcanic eruptions for the year. The number of volcanoes erupting across the
planet has been steadily rising from a meager number of just
55 recorded in 1990. 
Israel and the
Palestinians are within touching distance of a breakthrough agreement that would
end their historic conflict, John Kerry, the US secretary of
state, has said. America's top diplomat struck an unexpectedly upbeat note at
the end of a 36-hour visit - his eighth to the region this year - that was
billed in advance as an attempt to rescue peace talk mired in crisis.
Same-sex couples
will be able to marry legally in the UK for the first time on March 29 next year
after the Coalition brought forward the date in time for the
Easter wedding rush.
At the end of his general audience, Pope Francis
