December 23 - 'None' could be religion's new normal in Britain, USA
Article: Signs Of The Last Times
Merry what? Just in time for Christmas,
new statistics show "no religion is the new religion" in Great Britain,
according to a study released Monday. The study, by Westminster Faith Debates,
finds 38 percent adults in Great Britain, and
48 percent of those ages 18 to 29, checked no religion in online surveys
conducted in January and June by YouGov.
"Whilst it's always
possible that this trend could be reversed, it gets less and less likely as the
chain of memory connecting young people to religion stretches and snaps,"
said Lancaster University sociologist, an organizer of the
public debates on religion topics and author of the study.

January 2 - Fr. Paul Schenck on Mary, Mother of God
Article: Roman Catholic Church And The Last Days
The wonder of Mary is found in the two aspects
of her being - that of the Daughter of Israel, a young, Jewish mother of her
time, and The Mother of God, who is the
eternal Advocate, Helper, Benefactress, and Mediatrix, [960] who
shares God's eternal plan of salvation with the whole world;
Jew and Gentile. She is indeed, Mary, Mother of Christ, Mother of the
Church. [966] The Catechism continues -
In The Acts of the Apostles, as the disciples in Jerusalem awaited the
outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, it says that the Apostles
(1:12-14) - returned to Jerusalem
from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's
journey away; and when they had entered, they went up to the upper room,
where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and
Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the
Zealot and Judas the son of James. All these with one accord devoted
themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus.
Now, the
Upper Room symbolizes the Church: it is the mystical place where Jesus
celebrated the Passover, instituted the priesthood and first offered the
Eucharist. Now it is the place where they would receive the Baptism of the
Holy Spirit.

January 1 - Pope: Devoid of magic or fatalism, the Christian hope for peace, with Mary the Mother of God
Article: Roman Catholic Church And The Last Days
The hope for a New Year full of "peace and every
good" expressed by Pope Francis has nothing to do with the "magic and somewhat
fatalistic connotations of a new cycle that begins". "My hope - said the Pope -
is that of the Church, it is Christian hope! ... We know that history has a
centre: Jesus Christ, incarnate, dead and risen; it has a goal:
the Kingdom of God, kingdom peace, justice, freedom,
love, and has a force that moves toward that end : the Holy Spirit .
This Spirit
is the power of love that has fertilized the womb of the Virgin Mary, and is the
same that animates the projects and efforts of all the peacemakers".
This year's theme, chosen by Francis, is
"Fraternity; Foundation and Path to Peace ."
