January 28, 2007 - An Israeli First: Muslim Minister Accepted in Government
Article: Israel And The Last Days
by Gil RonenThe government of
Israel took a historic
step today, appointing
its first Muslim Arab Cabinet minister: Raleb
Majadle of the Labor
Party. His portfolio will be determined later.
Israel has had a Druze minister - Saleh
Tarif, who was Minister
Without Portfolio in 2001-
2 - but never an Arab one. While the Druze
speak Arabic, they serve
in the Israel Defense Forces and have been
considered loyal to the
state.
Majadle's appointment is
seen by some Israelis on the left of
the political spectrum as
a long overdue gesture of appeasement
towards Israel's Arab
minority, against which they feel Israel has
unfairly discriminated for
decades. Some Israelis on the political
right feel that
appeasement of Arabs is unwarranted and dangerous.

January 26, 2007 - Tom: The new 'Christ' of Scientology?
Article: Cults
Hollywood actor Tom
Cruise has reportedly been singled
out by Scientology leaders as the
"Christ" of the cult-like
religion and destined to spread the word of
Scientology around the world.
Leader
David Miscavige believes that in
years to come the actor will be
worshipped like Jesus for his
efforts to raise the profile of the
religion.
"Tom has been told he's
Scientology's Christ-like
figure," a source told The Sun. "Like
Christ,
he's been criticised for his views.
But future generations will realise
he was right."

January 30, 2007 - Bono's Songs Replacing Hymnals in Churches
Article: Ecumenical - Misc.
By
Lillian Kwon
U2's
songs are sung by millions around the
world, and lately, the rock band
has drawn a new score of fans -
Christian clergy.
The
U.S. church phenomenon "U2-charist" is
now hitting the Church of England
for the country's first Holy Communion
service using U2's best-selling
songs.
Already, 150 churches in 15 U.S. states
and
seven countries have had or plan
to have U2 Eucharists. The service
stems from an Episcopal church in
York Harbor, Maine, where the Rev.
Paige Blair displayed U2's lyrics
next to the altar in the summer of
2005.
Blair said much of U2's songs are
explicitly Christians and perfectly
suitable for worship service,
according to USA Today. She also noted
that some people might need time
to get used to the idea.
...But
rather than going with the
traditional hymnals, the bishop
organizing the U2-charist in England in
May is hiring a live band to sing U2
classics in a bid to attract youth.
"We need to try new
expressions. If we don't try to
update and refresh our thinking we will
die."
Meanwhile, the U2 Eucharist will not
just be about singing U2's
"Pride" (In the Name of Love) or other
hits
but a key part of the service is
the Millennium Development Goals. Bono
is at the forefront of the ONE
campaign to eradicate extreme poverty.
He is also a major influence in
the churches in the cause against
AIDS and has gained the respect of
many church leaders including
megapastor Bill Hybels of Willow Creek
Community Church and Rick
Warren of Saddleback Community Church who see
Bono leveraging his rock star
influence for the sake of the poor and
sick.

January 29, 2007 - 'Yoga lite' stretches into public schools
Article: New Age
SAN FRANCISCO, California
(AP) -- In Tara Guber's ideal
world, American children would meditate in
the lotus position and chant in
Sanskrit before taking stressful
standardized
tests.But when
she asked a public elementary
school in Aspen, Colorado, to teach yoga
in 2002, Christian fundamentalists
and even some secular parents lobbied
the school board. They argued
that yoga's Hindu roots conflicted with
Christian teachings and that using
it in school might violate the
separation of church and
state.
Portrayed as a New Age
nut out to brainwash young minds,
Guber crafted a new curriculum that
eliminated chanting and translated
Sanskrit into kid-friendly English.
Yogic panting became
"bunny breathing," and
"meditation" became "time
in."
"I stripped every piece
of anything that anyone could
vaguely construe as spiritual or religious
out of the program," Guber
said.
Now, more than 100 schools in 26 states
have adopted Guber's "Yoga
Ed." program and more than 300 physical
education instructors have been
trained in it.
