As another 420 comes and goes, its exact memory disappears into a haze of the pot vapour that surrounded it. However, the one thing Canadians will always remember about this 420 in particular is the historic announcement that Canada will have marijuana legislation in place by Spring 2017.
Health Minister Jane Philpott was attending a special session on worldwide drug policies at the UN General Assembly and made the announcement to fellow country officially. “I am proud to stand up for our drug policy that is informed by solid scientific evidence and uses a lens of public health to maximize education and minimize harm.” She said in a prepared statement.
Bill Blair is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Justice Minister and a controversial figure as the person overseeing the roll out of recreational marijuana across the country.
Nevertheless he had this to say to reporters, “It’s a great deal of work. It’s important to do it right. And so, we’re looking at regulations with respect to production, distribution, the retail and consumption of marijuana and we want to make sure that it’s based on the best advice from experts.”
Whether you think Trudeau should speed it up or take his time, this announcement is still a great step in the right direction.
