“Open
letter”

and
the
subsequent
“Common
Word”
document
addressed
from
Muslim
Clerics
to
Christian
leaders
focuses
on
essential
elements
of
shared
theology
between
the
two
faiths:
Love
of
God
and
love
of
neighbor.
These
two
greatest
commandments
are
presented
by
Jesus
Christ
in
the
Gospels
and
are
also
reflected
and
supported
as
essential
elements
of
Islam.
The
Prince
also
firmly
asserts
that
Christians
do
in
fact
worship
the
same
God
as
Muslims
do.
In order to address the question of ‘How do we move forward’? Tony Blair suggested six steps, the fifth of which was particularly contentious: Firstly we need to reclaim the religious space from the extremes, and secondly there are political and social changes that must be made to achieve this. Thirdly, we must live what we say in regards to equality and freedom of worship. And fourthly, education is necessary in that endeavor so that we may understand each other. Fifth, we must acknowledge that others have an equal path to salvation, even if it isn’t the one we choose for ourselves. And lastly, we need to organize. In the question and answer time, one of the students in the class continued to push Tony Blair on this point by asking how those who believe that there is only one way to salvation can engage constructively in this interfaith dialogue given that they would disagree with his fifth point. Tony Blair acknowledged that his proposition of respect for all views of salvation might be too extreme, and that we must work towards creating middle ground between accepting all truth claims and dismissing each other. In order to achieve this, Tony Blair referred to what Professor Volf had suggested earlier, the humility before God that we all can experience.
